No Nin isnt having a bath because he has been rolling in anything on the lawn ~ he was sitting on my knee and I was stroking him and came across a small lump just near his neck ~ I called Lyn to have a look and she said it was a Tic~ they are tiny little bugs that implant themselves into the skin of any animal and live by sucking it's blood ~ OMG I had been stroking a tic ~ unintentionally of course ~
Lyn is quite adept at removing these ~ She has had lots of experience as quite a few of her dogs in the past have picked them up ~ anyway she put her thumb and forefinger gripped it by her fingernails and pulled it out ~ I swear I heard that horrible little bug release it's grip ~ you have to be very careful that you remove the whole body including it's head as they can turn bad if you don't ~
To make sure it was clean Lyn put Nin in the bath tub and as you can see Barney wanted to join him he kept trying to climb into the tub and nearly made it twice ~ he just does not want to miss out on anything that Nin is having ~ even a bath lol ~
Nin still has this thing about wanting his meal in the little sitting room ~ and we cannot figure out why ~ I expect he has good reasons but just not telling us what they are ~

My dogs used to pick up tics in the field. You have to make sure the head comes out, they clamp their jaws into the animal. I was told by the vet either to put a lighted cigarette on the tics body, that'll release their grip and it comes out easily, otherwise a drop of lighter fuel or a smear of vaseline on it will suffiocate it as, apparently, they breathe through their bums when their head is stuck inside the animal host! Why am I such a mine of useless information??!! Jeannette xx http://journals.aol.co.uk/jlocorriere05/Welcometomytravels
Thankgoodness Lyn knew what to do ,Lyn has a lovely face ,and you have a very nice bath room ,.,.,.,Jan xx
I thought Jeanette's suggestion of the lighted cigarette (which I had also heard) sounded a bit expensive if you don't smoke. Then I thought, a pack of cigarettes would probably be a lot cheaper than a visit to the vet!

I know a few bloodsuckers myself, I might try the cigarette method next time I meet them, lol.
Glad you got Nin sorted. B. x
Ally...would you believe that I had the same experience with a tic...only it was with my son....I played the organ for a chapel service....Gary would sit up by the organ with me....and after playing I would sit in the pew...and he laid his head in my lap...now Gary had a head of hair women would kill for LOL...just beautiful...and I felt a bump on his head...checked it out...and shesh...a tick...I almost died right there in chapel LOL...took him to hospital after service....and they took it out...put an ointment on it...he was fine .... but Mom (me) sure did a checkup better after that....we lived in Georgia at the time....Hugs...Ora
poor nin....nasty bug....clever lynn. love Joanne
Thank goodness Nin is so cooperative about the bath. The tic will soon be just a bad memory, they're easily disposed of!
I think it's so funny that Nin has chosen his own dining area. Wouldn't you love to be able to see inside their minds and figure out the little quirks?

The cigarette idea works too
I guess; in childhood we used
a match, & or Kerosene (but not
both at the same time!) and I'm
talking about tics on us children
in the Australian Bush. With colder
weather coming the tics go into
hibernation, probably. In the dams
where we swam there were leeches
(no, not poor relatives) but slugs that
sucked your blood just like a tick.
Blood is mighty fine stuff, eh?

OOHHHH ticks are so nasty! Im glad you found it and got it out!
Kara
tics are fun..........................;( not
Oh my goodness... a tick? Warning you now that if I ever find one on Bud Spud I'll be calling your Lyn to come and de-bug him too ;o)

hi Ally...
Just as well you found the tic when you did, flippin' disgusting things ain't they.We got them a lot with the Greyhounds we had when they were in and out of the kennels while racing...
Astra!
Hi Ally, Ugh...tics are nasty little things. Hopefully Jake won`t bring one home! :o)

Love the graphics today Ally great stuff. Our dog used to pick up these beasties too one little tip I have if you put a little drop of spirit on it it will release easier as the spirit makes them drunk. Have a good evening Love Joan.
My son came home from scout camp with one .... he was lucky apparently some of the other boys were covered in them! They are yucky things and I hope one never lands on me!
Terry
nasty little things tics, Tilly and Kye not had any touch wood, just shown Stephen your photos and he couldnt belive that Barney was so much like Tilly is even down to the dark spots on his back,
take care Lynne xx
Nin behaves very well in the bathtub. I have to take my Grizzly outside when it's warm and hose him. I need to have some buckets of warm water to keep him still. He gets this stuff called Advantage to keep fleas and tics off of him. It's a liquid that I squeeze into the nape of his neck. It seems to work well as I live by woods and have tons of tics around here. xx Chris
We saw those little things quite often in Arizona, but I have not seen one here in Washington (knock on wood)! It still cracks me up that he has picked a certain room for his "dining room"! Jae
Yuck I hate those things....I had a vet tell me to coat the back of it with clear nail polish and it would back out from not being able to breathe then you could dispose of it. Glad you daughter was able to do it for you....Sandi
Yes ticks can be ugly things. I've never even seen one but I've heard the stories from dog owners. Glad you found it before it really bothered Nin. Linda in WA
My German friend spent many a happy hour de-ticking her cats with a cigarette: finger and thumb each side of tick and a quick dab of the cig and the tick curls up and drops off. Definitely cheaper than vet and the cats didn't seem to even notice! You'd have to be smoker though as I don't know how you can light a fag without dragging at it.- Angie, x
Hi Ally, I have got a super little gadget for removing ticks: it has a pronged end which you insert under said tick and twist. Hey presto ! In 2 sizes from the vet. OR, I read in a shooting mag. a little whisky or brandy on kitchen roll makes tick relax it's grip. Can't wait to try that one, and see drunken tick ! X Bunny
Hi Ally - poor Nin, nasty nasty tick - as Barney wants everything Nin has, hope he didn't want a tick too !!! Love the graphics today on your journal, you are sooooo clever :o)
Luv Jayne x
I am aquainted with those nasty little bugs. One of the reasons John sold one of his pieces of property was because of them. There were lots of deer so hence deer ticks as they are called here. Paula
thanks for all the remidies to get rid of tics hope they don't get any more but will try some of these out in future
Ally
I loved these pics of Barney trying to get in the bath with Nin. That was really nice of Lyn to come and help you with this little problem. Now, I wonder why Nin wants his food served int the sitting room?
Sam

Tics are horrible things. Another way to get rid of them is to soak them well with metholated spirits using a piece of cotton wool. You are right if the head is left in, it turns the wound sceptic. So far, we have never had one on a dog. Lovely photos
TY for your visit & comment, hope you & yours have a lovely weekend.

Those ticks are nasty. We have some summers that they are really bad, here in Virginia. They say they come from all the dears that roams around here. One time, my Buster, the boxer, woke up one day and could hardly walk. We took him to the emergency vet, and they fought a tick between his toe and it caused him to have arthritis really bad. We had to give him all kinds of medication to help him. He recovered but now that he's 7 years old, he has arthritis in his hind legs. Not as bad as the tick arthritis, but bad enough that he drags his toes when he walks, when it gets cold. I wonder if that tick caused him to have that type of arthritis now. Thanks for coming by my journal, Alley.
your friend, Liz
I am so happy the tick was removed...they are terrible. Nin sounded like a trouper...I do hope you have a wonderful week ahead...coming back here to do some catching up with you...many hugs and love,
Joyce
Well, now I know how to take a tick from a dog I will just have to get one. A dog I mean. Then I could take it round the streets shouting for any tick in need of a home. Can you imagine it. "Here Tick, here tick. Tickless dog here.Vacant dog, no previous occupants. Bless you Ally, I liked it.
I always feel sorry for the dogs that pick up things but had you not noticed what was on your pet's body then the poor dog could have gone on with the tic for a long time.
Good for you for finding the blood sucker.
John.
Ally, that was such a sweet little entry (apart from you stroking a tic of course!) I loved the pics, poor Barney missing out lol. I wonder why nin wants his dinner in the little sitting room, what a dear little quirk that is! Linda xx
