how the wind doth blow

Preview

I'm not sorry to~day is nearly over ~ it has been a horrendous day ~ with winds blowing and uprooting trees and demolishing fences ~ our fence at the side of the bungalow lies broken and scattered on the ground ~ the side gate is hanging forlornly by it's hinges waiting for some TLC to put it together again ~

Preview

We feel lucky as we have a woodburner and could light a fire to warm the bungalow ~ but couldn't boil a kettle for a cup of tea ~ neither Lyn nor I knew how to switch the gas on in the caravan which stands in the garden ~ something we must learn to do in case there is another power cut ~

Preview

Tom has had the roof blown off the top of his shed and it landed exactly where my car would have been parked ~ but luckily my car was not there at the time ~

Preview

Being the first bungalow with only one neighbour we couldn't fathom out if we were the only ones without electricity ~ so we braved going out ~ just up the road to see if anyone else had a power cut ~ the wind was so powerful it blew us to Lyn's car ~ couldn't see any lights on in the village ~ as one neighbour approached she said the whole village was without power ~ but that it was expected to be connected soon ~ I do hope it is as I was missing my computer ~

That crazy mouse and my name tag is just how I felt as the wind whipped my hair and made me draw my coat tightly around me

O oh what a dramatic scene! In
England!?? Sounds like a blizzard off
the coast of Iceland on an island that
just came up out of the dark sea
never before seen!  (Ally has launched
into writing a novel or short story!?)

Well, why not??

Hi Ally. I don't know why but I decided to brave the winds and go to my local Tesco's supermarket today with my nan. I think it would have been a good idea for me to stay home, as I nearly got blown over by the gale-force winds. It was horrendous, and I think the weather will get worse before it gets better.

Keep safe,
Leigh :-)

Ally, you have my sympathy but for reasons I explained privately, that's all I got.

OH!! Dear Ally it sounds very much like where I am at the moment. The waves have been lashing the promenade realy high today bouncing off the harbour wall..I havnt been too well so I was indoors anyway.Best place in weather like this for me and anyone I think.I do hope it subsides soon.I am terrified of going out in the wind.OH! what terrible damage it does too.I hope you and Lynn find a way to lhow to turn the gas on in the caravan. If its a cylinder just turn the switch on top of the cylinder,if it is connected up to the pipe which leads to the cooker and try lighting the cooker .If nothing happens turn it the other way.Hope I dont blow you up LOL!!!!!No seriously it should be just a switch on top fof the cylinder.which goes left or right. For on or Off.Take Care Hope your electricity is soon restored or one of your neighbours fill you a flask of tea.I would if I were nearer .Take care God Bless

poor you - we had a lovely day apart from sa little snow this morning

We went to my sister's in Shropshire and it was pretty scarey. Coming back hardly anyone had electricity, it seemed a bit surreal with village pubs lit be candlelight and no street lights.

Hope it's all calmed down now.

You had a lucky escape with the car/shed roof. We've been lucky too, no damage to our home - so far, but there's been a lot of chaos out there today.

Now Althea, you keep yourself safe during this wind event.  Thank goodness your car was spared today.  Glad you have the wood burning stove to keep you warm.  I hope tomorrow brings a much calmer day for you, a day with electricity again.

Ally, I told Sandra that it sounds like that horrible wind we got the night of December 14th (the one that sent the roof of my porch sailing) has now reached the U.K.  Stay safe and hopefully you won't have too much damage.  Wind storms are very scary....Linda in Washington

What a day you have had in Norfolk can just imagine it with the landscape so flat the wind would howl around. Glad you were able to keep warm thats the main thing. Hope by the time you read this all is back to normal. Love Joan.

Glad to hear that you are ok.  Those winds were ferocious round here too but at least we didn't have a power cut to contend with.  The area round here is littered with uprooted trees, chimney stacks etc all due to the wind.  Matt was sent home from College early yesterday as four trees had been uprooted and taken the steel fencing with them as they crashed down.  Thankfully things are better today.  Eileenx

Hello Ally - Norfolk had it far worse than Cornwall i think......the wind is quite terrifying tho......glad your new little car went unscathed, and those wood burning stoves are jus so fab eh?
Love to you both - Jayne x

I saw your winds were really bad on the news...so thankful you are okay.  Those were terrible winds we saw.  We have a wood stove insert, if our power goes out we can use it to cook something I hope.  So happy your car was not inside to have damage done...you both were lucky on that end.  Hope you have a lovely weekend, with no wind!
Hugs and love,
Joyce

It was sooo windy yesterday wasn't it... sorry about your fence Ally, I was watching mine being blown about quite anxiously!  My J was almost blown into the bushes at the side of our house on the way home from school, though luckily I was there holding his hand, I saved him :o)

Hi Ally sorry about your fence, and gate .
We were lucky our electric didn't go off but the lights kept flickering so I looked out the candles and matches just in case .Glad its been calmer today ....Love Jeanxx

Those gales were awful Ally, so glad your car wasn't where it should be.  I've no idea how to switch the gas on in a caravan either, it's one of those things you never think of until you need to do it. Rache

Sounds like you have some really bad winds to deal with there.  I found out quick that northwest Georgia is NOT like south of Atlanta.  The wind blows all the time.  The only difference is the speed.  Right now it is pretty high.  I learned to adapt when the chicken house roof flew off and I lost many chicken pens being rolled and smashed to bits.  Not to mention all the cheap tarp ripped to shreds by the wind.  Have to buy the heavy duty stuff. Stake everything down, tie everything down.  I am glad you have your power back and you stay warm and take care.  I am ready for winter to be over.

Hi there Ally,

I was sorry to here that you have been without power.

You are right about the gas and, as a back us, from the old camping days, my wife and I have have kept a small camping cooker where we can boil water for a cup of tea.  The cooker is linked to a small but effective Calor bottle. (I beleive Calour is a Spanish word for heat.)

The cooker is called a Tilley Titon, it is 35 to 40 years old and works as good now as it did when we first purchased it.  In fact, there is hardly a mark on it.  We are very lucky to have the cooker.

I hope that your life is now back to normal.

By for now and we hope that all is well with you know.

John.

Oh my. I feel for you with the winds.  We had some of those nasty winds here in WA earlier ourselves and it's something else to watch things get blown off or down.  Keeping you and yours in my prayers.

Ally, my Mama was telling me she saw on the news where the winds over there were like 100 miles an hour! That is just so scary, I am glad you are alright. Hope your having a pleasant Sunday. :)

Ally, I was reading about the horrible gales in the UK and across Europe.  I'm so glad you're still in one piece even though you did have some damage.  I'm so glad your car wasn't parked where the roof landed.  LOL..we do miss our computers, though, don't we.  Take care!  Love xx Chris

Hi Ally, sorry I'm late commenting but I had alerts turned off for a week. I'm glad you survived the awful winds! I got blown into the road on Thursday, lucky no cars were around! Hi Ally how awful and I was complainin g about the cold. Here in Chepstow we are always lucky we seem to aways get the tail end of things.  Cold and damp but nothing too drastic.  No power cuts and no trees falling.  Where I live we are up and away from the river Wye, so we are lucky, we get no flooding.  Years ago we did get a lot of flooding but the council have refubished all the riverbank and stopped the problem.  Actually our whole town was refubished at a cost of 3 million pounds two years ago, its a tourist town because we have a great castle and its now quite a nice place to come and visit, such a lot of history.  Will tell you more in my blogg. Please keep well and warm indoors. Kathie.

Here it is the 1st of Feb and I am trying to clean out my mailbox of 300 alerts/emails and I opened yours.    I am glad you made it thru the storm though you had some damage.    There has been some bad ice storms and long power outages for days in areas to the north and west and today flights are already canceled and one airline has moved its planes in the southeast with ice predicted.    It will be down to 5 degrees F Tuesday morning here.    We just had our first snow last night of 2006/2007 winter and more snow late today.    There is only an inch here and not much predicted to fall later.     I have been working on a pen and ink drawing of a one year old German Sheppard for a J-land friend's personal book of poems and it is almost done.   I am doing alot of reading on my board for my back.    I will take a photo of the far back of my property today with the snow for an entry as I have not done one for awhile.    I hope things are going well for you and Lyn and that Barney and Nin are healthy and happy as usual.   mark

OH no, I'm so sorry you are having such bad weather.  We had some really bad storms come through Florida yesterday and last night.  Some tornados too but not too close to us thank goodness.  Good luck getting your stuff fixed and thank goodness your car wasn't parked there!  Love, Shelly
